Sean Phillips aka DJ DodgeTazer Great year for new jazz/funk music, and this caps it off. Great to hear superb musicianship and compositions, but still loose and groovy - begging repeat listens. Capsular Fever is a standout on a superb collection. Some kind of mix of Emergency on Planet Earth, By All Means, and Kid Charlemagne.
What a groove, goose bumps every-time... Favorite track: Capsular Fever.

MG1967 Future rare grooves album. Like its predecessors, this one has more jazz, funk but also plain good soulful grooves than one can shake a stick at, so make sure to support these galactic gunslingers while they still fight for us!

Due to a phenomenon called diffraction, there are fundamental limits to the smallest object that we can possibly see. This governing equation says; that in order to see smaller and smaller, we need to make our telescopes bigger and bigger.. And even with the most powerful optical telescopes here on earth, we can’t even get close.. We would need a telescope the size of the entire Earth! SPACE DISCO TIME

Welcome to my musical wonderland!
Good to have you back if you’ve been a fan of my other albums, or seen me jump around on a keyboard somewhere..

Perhaps you’re expecting a cosmic concept album once again; another ramble through the magic of evolution, or a vague yarn of little green men discovering a planet once inhabited by humans - their sole remnant, a footprint on the moon..

Yes, you’ll certainly find cosmic yarns here..

How about a sci-fi space opera; a battle of the East vs the West; a cautionary tale as resources dwindle back on Earth?

A daring race to mine Elements with strange names such as Ytterium, from asteroids and comets..

A locking of horns between Musk and Bezos? Whimsical attempts to land a Tesla Roadster on Mars, accompanied with a fanfare of Superconductive funk and kaleidoscopic analog synthesis..

You’ll find a love-letter, sung through a homemade vocoder, to the team who assembled the most spectacular image I’ve ever seen - an actual black hole, in the Eye of our neighbour galaxy, M87.

Of course, there's the heady Disco all-out, chips-in, gung-ho mission to Space - driven by a lust for progress, as much a part of human DNA as an antenna is a part of an ant.. Curiosity which will either save us, or be our downfall..

There’s a tale of creeping malaise in space - a Capsular Fever, within which seventeen astronauts gradually tire of their cosmic compadres - irked by the toothpaste left uncleaned in the toilet of the habitation capsule, the space boots floating around the sleeping pod..

But as this past year of pandemic pandemonium has made such tales seem quixotic and slightly contrived, I think it’s time for me to come clean, and reveal a bit of my honest self.
Time to put my feet on the ground and balance my head, which is always partly lost in space.

Those weren’t floating space boots cluttering the capsule in my mind’s eye - they were the saxophone player’s trainers I tripped over every night as I stumbled to bed, punch drunk to my bunk, whilst aboard the tourbus back in 2018.

The tourbus sanctuary upon which I wrote this album, whilst travelling the USA.

In La Quinta Hotels in Charlotte, North Carolina.. Whilst smoking a jazz cigarette beside the Mississippi.. Whilst staring out across Niagara Falls.. During the seemingly endless hours of waiting in the cavernous back-stage of the ‘Enormodome, Oklahoma City’..
With headphones and a trusty Akai keyboard I purchased from a dusty music shack in hip Austin, Texas, I transcribed the melodies which were floating through my subconscious.

And I could not wait to return home to my Spanish queen, my beloved 88 key Fender Rhodes, and a promise to write the best album I’d ever written..

Wheras my first musical journey - ‘Zoology for Martians’ - felt like a quiet rebellion - having masqueraded as a hip-hop gangster and been forced to wear Puma tracksuits on stage (although the Pyramid at Glastonbury was definitely a trip) -
‘Space Disco Time’ - this album - was actively and inquisitively encouraged by my fellow bandmates on tour.

For the gift of this space to breathe and be myself whilst travelling that vast, fascinating, frustrating yet frequently captivating foreign land that is the USA, I wish to offer my sincere thanks to my friends on that fertile third tour - Ryan, Kevan, James, Uncle Themis, Garrison, Mary, Vangelis, Karina, Deedee, Roy, Mikey, Jon and George.
And a special thankyou of course, to Maria de Los Angeles, with whom the inner journey was shared.

And the final doff of the cap surely must go to the breathtaking landscapes and cityscapes we rolled on through, and the multitude myriad of wonderful folk I met on my travels of Japan and the USA in 2018, all of whom inspired me to write this album.

To all of you, and to you dear listener, I’m thankful you lent an ear..

So enough about me - let’s introduce the gang..
My band of brothers, my cosmic cohorts, my friends..

THE GALACTIC GUNSLINGERS

Nick van Gelder (Drums / Percussion / Co-Producer)
Andy Tolman (Bass)
Terry Lewis (Guitar)
Nat Martin (Guitar)
Drew Wynen (Guitar)
Chance Hayden (Guitar)
Kim Murray (Guitar)
Bobby Quigley (Guitar)
João Caetano (Percussion)
Dave Lewis (Sax)
Reuben Fowler (Flugel)

I believe the best music is born out of friendship and warm vibes. The rest is just plucks, thwacks, and a few scribbles to tell us when and how.

Whilst it seems a little discourteous of the artwork designer (sack him, whoever he is) to feature just three of us on the album cover,
it also seems fitting that it should be Andy and Nick joining me. We’ve spent the past decade in each other’s constant musical company.
We are a groove unit. The Musketeers. It is a joyful telepathy when we play our instruments together.

Nick van Gelder is the copilot flying this spaceship with me.
The very first writing sessions in the states were always guided by the thought - ‘I can’t wait to hear Nick drumming on this’, and since then, his tireless dedication to making it all sound right has kept the ship on a steady course to Mars. I can’t thank you enough Nick x

It’s funny how you meet people sometimes. I met Andy Tolman during a mundane function gig in Tower Bridge, probably over a decade ago. The gig was spiced up by my near-electrocution and subsequent premature termination of the gig..
Our friendship and groove started with a bang, and has continued thus ever since.

Terry Lewis, dear musketeer also; For every musical moment which makes me smile broadest when I remember it, Terry and I are grooving side by side..
And a friendship which predates all others here, going right back to those Halcyon Harman days, and hazy memories of the Pigalle..

Nat Martin - We shared some wonderful moments playing with Katie all those years ago, didn’t we..
Of all the stages we shared, the ones that make me smile most were those Half Moon Sundays. Just guitar and keys. I wouldn’t fly this spaceship without you in the engine room, Brother.

Drew Wynen, the one chap who’s prepared to dive just that bit further than most into the cosmic rabbit hole (offering a dreadful pun as we break free of Earth’s Orbit).
Your enthusiasm and groove took this fledgling album to a new level, and your company is always enriching..

Chance Hayden - my Portland Brother.. Your wonderful playing I remember hearing so clearly at the Wardrobe in Leeds, after that Autumn bus-ride up north we shared..
The honour is all mine, sir.. Your textures and harmony are sublime.

Kim Murray - cool, calm, and completely cosmic..
Dear friend, neighbour - I can’t express the delight I’d feel every time I saw your car on Portobello Road, knowing that the Ukai was going to explode once more in galactic confetti that particular Sunday afternoon.

Bobby Quigley - Our friendship began deep underwater, crossing the North Sea nightly.. Finding solace, forging an alliance at the ping-pong table in the ‘clubhouse’, jazz woodbines keeping us sane..
Of all the places I ever played, nowhere feels more like home than our Groove Nights. Long may they continue when the world rights itself, Brother.

João Caetano - In the midst of a worldwide whirlwind back in 2016, I have a sweet memory of rum and calm.. Post Incognito gig, Mauritius, sitting around a campfire, serenaded in Portuguese by your good warm-hearted self.
I’m overjoyed to have you grace my album with your passion and fire. The groove is electric.

Dave Lewis - I couldn’t possibly make an album without featuring your sublime sax playing, dear Dave! I wrote Tututoo especially for you.
If only so we can somehow bottle the essence of those lazy jazzy Sundays; that magical Groove Grotto evening documented here so the world can share a bit of it too..

Reuben Fowler - The one gunslinger who shared the tourbus with me, tripped over those trainers alike, and totally gets it..
You played a spellbinding solo, with soul and feeling equal to the musical brilliance of your notes. I can’t thank you enough for offering this funk the serious jazz gravitas it needed.

So.. I believe that’s everyone, and everything..
Let’s get cosmic.

Who’s in for Space Disco Time?

Carl Hudson x
