Aah! Lets think of space.
Are you sitting comfortably? Then let’s begin..
High, way up high.. The Human Race
It’s time for me to start the story..
On a trail.. It’s a Hansel and Gretel adventure,
and so much more of the breadcrumb science,
The reliance - to leave the shore
of humanity in state of war.
We take the necessary steps to stamp
our very essence of the electric force that created
our lust for progress whipping post
(Of the Humanity crisis - this, our ghost)
To the chorus..
Aldrin, Collins, Armstrong.. Apollo throng
Gagarin flight by Russian might,
and up and coming
China
Ocean Liner
The powers combined -
our ‘Captain Planet’ crew to man it..
Sail to the stars..
Disco to Space!
Leave the Earth and fly to the sky,
To win the race,
Build the Mars base,
Who’s in for Disco Space Time?
Me..
And me…
So, my friend, your ear I’ll bend
As I try not to lie or condescend..
It’s fiction and fact, this space abstract -
A tale of technology - missions to Mars and back..
Second chorus:
To the furthest reaches
Those astronomic creatures; preachers..
teach us all we need to know..
To fly, rocket ship,
Our microchip - pilot the path through starlight..
Console - neon hue..
Here’s what we do -
Galactic Mars adventure!
NASA (Jack King): “10.. 9.. We have ignition sequence start..”
Kronkite: “The men in the mission control centre at Houston were ready..”
Astronauts: “He says we’re looking good!”
*cry of elation*
Kronkite: “..Fire up the third stage engine..
Borman: (This one’ll be the third stage cutoff)
Kronkite: “..Fly the Astronauts up.. Break them free of Earth’s orbit -
Send them off to where no man has ever gone!”
*Space Disco Time*
King: Four.. The Engines are on.. Three..
Nixon: Gee, you look great!
Anders: Whoaa.. Yes!
*Hyperspace warp*

Radio pictures of the darkness,
Gravity of the neutron star..
There’s a wild implosion
Seen from the the ocean
Stretch the laser beam..
From the mountain, there’s no doubt,
The twisting of the web of space and time..
At the centre of the galaxy - gravitation lensing
Supermassive black hole fantasy -
Seek and ye shall find..
Bouman:
A hundred years ago, Albert Einstein first published his theory of General Relativivity
In the years since then, scientists have provided a lot of evidence in support of it..
But one thing predicted from this theory - black holes!
Kronkite:
‘Seventy-six hours later - the most astonishing pictures of a generation were provided to man’
Bouman:
“However -
Taking a picture of it - extremely difficult! Why is that?
Well, it all comes down to a simple equation..
Due to a phenomenon called diffraction, there are fundamental limits to the smallest object that we can possibly see.
This governing equation says; that in order to see smaller and smaller, we need to make our telescopes bigger and bigger..
And even with the most powerful optical telescopes here on earth, we can’t even get close..
We would need a telescope the size of the entire Earth!
And if we could build this Earth-sized telescope, we could just start to make out
The distinctive ring of light, indicative of a black hole’s event horizon..
And in the famous words of Mick Jagger - ‘You can’t always get what you want.. But if you try sometimes,
You might just find - that you get what you need.”

Capsular Fever

*****************************************************************************************
Neil left his toothpaste by the door -
Buzz had to clean it up and mop the floor.
Two hundred solar days go by -
Capsular fever way up high.
Time for a drama in the sky!
‘No I didn’t break the instamatic camera’
‘No? then what’s this?’
‘Sorry Guv’nor.’
‘I want the radiator turned to hot..’
‘Not my job..’
‘Sue me.’
It can get a little frantic on the spaceship -
Try, we get by..
Roger!
As we sail upon the module in the starlight -
Mars, be our guide -
It’s another day..
Seventeen astronauts confined -
Dreaming of the earth they left behind.

Newsreader:
Rare earth elements -
without them, we wouldn’t have even the most basic of modern technologies.
Let’s have a quick scientific primer.
Seventeen metals; most of which, most of us have never heard of.. (Yttrium)
China mines most of it (Scandium)
More than 95 percent.. (And the Lanthanides)
Demand for these metals is rising -
They’re key to our modern day technologies.
Like smartphones; Like electric cars;
Even military hardware, like guided missile systems.
We begin our series on rare earth elements with this report from Melissa Chen.
Chen:
What looks like barren land and concentric circles
boring deeper and deeper into an open pit -
Why, the locals lovingly call this place ‘Treasure Mountain’ -
The largest deposit of rare earth minerals in the world.
Seventeen metals with names such as Scandium, Yttrium and the Lanthanides -
Needed for the everyday technology; used from mobile phones to cars.
Without this mine, modern life as we know it wouldn’t exist.

Kronkite:
There was an agonising wait for those back on earth -
Maybe scientists will learn more than they’ve ever known about their nearest neighbour in the Universe,
And pick the spot where the first astronauts are to land.
The voice of mission control begins the last chapter of the flight story..
01011011 01001011 10001011 00101011
‘Rendezvous is achieved.
Seventy six hours later, the most astonishing pictures of a generation.
Descent all clear, Brave volunteer.
Through stratosphere - the pioneer.
‘Break them free of Earth’s orbit - send them off to where no man has ever gone.’
146 hours, 58 minutes - Recovery 2, within the last minute..
.. has reported they have a flashing light in sight..
.... and they followed that with - “We have voice contact with the crew”.
Where no-one came, the Astronauts climbed into a life raft.
Bring engineer,
Build biosphere,
Earth disappear, ‘no sign of life on this barren landscape..’
Brave new frontier. ‘in fact, no sign that life ever existed..’
